Yoga Balls Help Improve Focusing and Learning

My students need their own stability balls to sit on at their desks. This extra movement will help stimulate blood flow to the brain, which will help improve learning.

My Students

My first graders start the day off with music and movement. We sing a morning greeting song and shake each others hands. Focusing and paying attention often interfere with students being able to complete their work. Through music and movement,students are able to learn for longer periods of time.

My students are 6 and 7 year old fantastic children who are eager to learn.

They remind me of Tigger from Winnie the Pooh. They have a lot of energy and trying to keep them engaged for a period of time, can sometimes be a struggle. I feel that having each child have their own yoga ball to sit on will help with this challenge. They enjoy brain breaks where we stop and engage in music and dancing. They also enjoy learning through educational songs. My school is a Core Knowledge school. Students in first grade are learning a challenging curriculum. Can you believe I taught my first graders about Mesopotamia last week and this week we will time travel back to Ancient Egypt! My principal is supportive, my teammates and I collaborate well and the community is all about giving back to the school. I feel that I have the luckiest job in the world.

My Project

If each student has their own yoga ball (stability ball) at their desk, this will help them "get their wiggles out" which aides their natural need to move. In return, students will be able to focus by expanding the excess energy that they have built up during the day. Sitting on the yoga ball also improves core strength which helps develop large motor skills, which helps support small motor skills like handwriting.

Since students will have more opportunity for movement due to the yoga balls, first graders will be more engaged in their learning.

This will help them reach the Common Core Standards and help them feel successful in the classroom. When students feel successful, they have a high self esteem and believe they can do anything! They will become stronger and more independent readers, become fluent with their addition and subtraction facts and they will be open to take risks and try new challenges.
