My Project

Hello! I am in my second year of teaching high school in Gretna, LA. I am also in my second year of Teachers for America. I completed Reiki level 1 training as well as a 200-hour yoga teacher training. I teach creative writing and yoga courses. Also, I built partnerships with nonprofits in Orleans parish to provide unpaid self-care and yoga workshops for the youth however I need more equipment.

A lot of my students are from underserved communities in Orleans and Jefferson parish communities.

The school is racially diverse however we have a large population of Black and Brown students. My students are coming to school with trauma from their living environments as well as generational trauma. Last year was hard due to the pandemic, a lack of teachers, and Hurricane Ida which displaced a lot of my students. I noticed that many of my students' mental health was suffering and I wrote a proposal to start the first yoga and mindfulness course at my school. I received approval to launch the yoga classes for this school year (2022-2023).

My yoga class incorporates breathing and mindfulness techniques as well as sound baths. The class primarily focuses on the importance of self-care, especially for students of color. The skills learned in the class will benefit them for the rest of their life. For people of color, self-care is a medium for coping with the detrimental psychological effects of racial oppression and discrimination. I am teaching students that self-care doesn’t always require you to spend money on an expensive spa experience, they can carve out 15 minutes a day to detach from their phones and practice breathing exercises and yoga postures. My course also offers a large field trip every semester to a local yoga studio.
