Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
It breaks my heart when a student enthusiastically shows me their book choice and I have to tell them that the book they have been watching their friends read and are now clutching tightly is too challenging for them to read. The solution? Grade-level audiobooks for my struggling readers!
My students live in an urban, low-income city comprised largely of immigrant families.
Many of my students speak a language other than English at home. Despite the challenges that they face, the students in my school are consistently eager to learn and enthusiastic about new and exciting learning opportunities.
One exception, however, is with my struggling readers. The fourth grade students in my classroom represent a range of reading abilities and many are reading significantly below grade level. Some have received intervention and support throughout their school years, yet, continue to struggle with reading. By fourth grade, many of these struggling readers become frustrated and less motivated to read--especially when they are not able to enjoy the grade-level texts that interest them. I need to motivate these students to read and provide them with the opportunity to access grade-level books as audiobooks!
My Project
I am requesting five mp3 players with headphones and protection plan. My struggling readers will be able to listen to grade-level books while they read along with the text. They can read at their own pace, pausing to clarify words, and rewinding to reread a sentence or paragraph, while at the same time building their vocabulary and reading the same books as their peers.
The primary purpose of the mp3 players will be to provide differentiated access to grade-level texts for students who are reading significantly below grade level. They will be able to read and work with the texts that class is reading, learn and use the same vocabulary words, and participate in the class discussions about the characters and themes we are working with.
Students will also be able to use the mp3 players during independent reading time so that they can enjoy the same grade-level books that their peers enjoy. I will no longer have to tell a student that he or she cannot enjoy a 4th grade book because it is too hard for them!
I need to motivate and engage my struggling readers!
Fourth grade is a critical year for struggling readers as they become frustrated and lose their motivation to read. Help turn my students into readers with access to grade-level audiobooks!
