Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Kids need books in their homes, their bedrooms, and their backpacks. They ought to flip through them, feel their weight, and even smell them. Yes, smell them! In order to do this, kids need to OWN books. Providing books for children to keep is a surefire way to promote a lifelong love of reading. At my middle school in South Los Angeles, very few students have started to develop personal libraries. Many of them rarely read at home, much less visit bookstores. It is partly for this reason that many of our students read at a third of fourth grade level (they are in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades). I have started a book club for students with the simple purpose of putting enjoyable, high-interest, age-appropriate books into the hands and homes of students. Each month I pass out a book and a few weeks later a group of smiling, cheerful kids comes to the library (I'm the librarian) for a lunch of pizza and apples. We talk about the story we read, and then I give the kids a new book. Each month I get asked the same question. "Miss, can we really keep it?" My answer has so far been an enthusiastic, "YES! You can keep it! Forever and ever!" The pleasure I see on the faces of my students when they realize the book is theirs to keep is the best part of my day, and my job! In order to continue this project, I need help purchasing sets of books. Scholastic Books sells good paperbacks at very reasonable prices. I have come up with a list of 6 titles that all cost less than $5.00 per copy. This would provide our book club with more than a semester's worth of materials. Middle school students need low- or no-pressure activities that allow them to enjoy books. As part of a book club, students don't have to worry about assignments, tests, or getting the 'right' answer. Instead, they are allowed to build confidence, friendships, and a personal reading style. Giving them the books to keep takes it one step further, impressing upon them the everyday joy of reading.
