Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
YES We Can! My students believe they can overcome the challenges they face with reading. They are constantly required to complete assessments to measure the success of the interventions being provided for them. Their progress will be constantly monitored using the thrive tablet to drive instruction.
I provide intervention for at-risk students in grades Kindergarten through fifth grade.
These students are eager to learn to read despite the difficulties they experience with reading. They are mostly Latinos and from low income families. They attend a school in a high poverty area where resources are scarce. 100% of these students receive free breakfast and lunch. Our school community has worked hard to ensure that we meet the yearly Academic Performance Index on the California standards test. The students I work with have scored in the lowest 20% in my school and therefore need extra support to be able to read and take the tests successfully. The students attend intervention classes everyday and are always eager to find out if they are making progress on the assessments. They believe they can succeed against all odds.
My Project
Providing intervention without progress monitoring is a herculean task. Using the tablet and accessories will enable me to test and monitor my students frequently using different assessments including DIBELS, and BURST. The students will be able to know the results of the assessments instantly and I will be able to use the result to drive instruction and improve student achievement. Furthermore, the students will also be able to utilize numerous technology-based intervention programs that were previously not available to them to improve their word attack skills, and reading comprehension.
If my intervention classes get the tablet, I will be able to monitor their progress more frequently and use the results to drive the instruction provided for them.
Students will immediately have access to their results and set personal goals for future assessments. Student achievement will also be improved through weekly progress monitoring and the use of other technology-based intervention programs. Our daily chant of YES WE CAN! will become a reality for my students.
