I provide intervention for at-risk students in grades Kindergarten through fifth grade. These students are eager to learn to read despite the difficulties they experience with reading. They are mostly Latinos and from low income families. They attend a school in a high poverty area where resources are scarce. 100% of these students receive free breakfast and lunch. Our school community has worked hard to ensure that we meet the yearly Academic Performance Index on the California standards test. The students I work with have scored in the lowest 20% in my school and therefore need extra support to be able to read and take the tests successfully. The students attend intervention classes everyday and are always eager to find out if they are making progress on the assessments. They believe they can succeed against all odds.
