Yes, We Are Being Dramatic: Our Club Needs Stage Equipment
My students need a stage floor spotlight, wireless mic receiver cables and AA batteries in order to put on the best free theatrical productions possible!
By day, I am a special education teacher. At day's end I transform into our school's Once Upon a Courtroom Drama co-director. We currently have 32 students in the club in grades 1-4.
My students are so dramatic...yes, dramatic...and deserve to put on the most professionaal performances possible!
Four years ago I started an elementary Mock Trial club sponsored by the SC Bar association for grades 4-5. For two years we learned about the law, studied scripts and performed puppet shows of the fairy tale trials. Last year I joined forces with a colleague and we created a full-length original mock trial script- including comedy, song, and...romance!
This year our school became a K-4 school. After losing grade 5, we decided to open our club up to students in grades 1-4. There is no cost for our club and we do not exclude students based on their academic or acting abilities. We feel so strongly about the dramatic arts, that ALL cast members get a role in the play or help with stage crew...we do not leave anyone out! I can say without a doubt that there is no other club of its kind in our state!
My Project
The students perform full length original mock trial plays based on a fairy tale- this year it is a spin on Cinderella. In order to put on a play, their voices need to be heard. We recently purchased wireless mic receiver sets that depleted much of our funds raised from various fundraisers. We still need to purchase cables for the mic receivers and batteries for the wireless microphones. While our stage has overhead lights, we do not have a spotlight for those just right special effects often needed when performing in front of the curtain.
Wireless mics and a portable spotlight would make these students feel like they are truly center stage.
The students spend countless hours practicing. Your gifts will support and enhance what we've purchased and allow them to give their performances of a lifetime!
Research shows that students involved in the dramatic arts have a creative and emotional outlet where they can build upon their self-esteem, memory, reading and communication skills in a cooperative setting. Our goal is to get as many of our students involved in our Once Upon a Courtroom Drama club in the future. Having professional equipment will make our club second to none. These materials will be able to be used by countless students for years to come.
