I have the great pleasure of being the math teacher of a group of very enthusiastic and eager middle school English language learners (ELLs). Most of my students have recently arrived to the United States as refugees. For many, my classroom is their first encounter in a formal educational setting. Our public school is special because overall we have a large population of ELL students. Not only are my students formally learning English for academic purposes, they are also building friendships with others they ordinarily would have never known or communicated with from all around the world.

I really enjoy teaching math and many of my students claim it to be their favorite subject. However, it is tremendous challenge to convey mathematical concepts and vocabulary when so many come without a strong foundation in numeracy skills, and/or do not have the language to express what it is they already know. Providing hands-on math manipulatives eases this challenge. When I was a new teacher, I borrowed and used math manipulatives with great success. The same blocks and cubes I use to teach place value, work for borrowing and carrying in addition and subtraction, which then lead into multiplication and division. I am very thankful for the many helpful and supportive colleagues who have let me borrow these learning tools. I am no longer a “new” teacher, and realize it is time my students and our classroom finally have our very own tools that make math fun and accessible...all the time. By the way, I would be more than happy to share my materials with new teachers and other colleagues (in case you were wondering what I could possibly do with 1,000 centimeter cubes).

Apart from the 1,000 cubes that will support basic arithmetic concepts, I need additional materials because I do not solely teach math in my math class. I consider it to be a language class where we learn how to listen for, read, write, and speak about the different ways we use math. Above all, I am a language teacher. I need to help my middle school age students catch up to the math language and strategies their native English peers have been accustomed to since birth. Using cubes, counters, play money, and Cuisenaire rods will help my students talk about, manipulate and visualize how math works.

Thank you for your support. I can’t wait to show this year’s class my “magic trick” that turns nine loose ones cubes into a single tens place rod upon adding just one more cube. How do they reappear? Believe it or not, it is the magic of subtraction! Your donation will ensure that my ELL students will learn math skills in an engaging, interactive, and plain old fun way...no smoke and mirrors necessary!
