Yearbook Class in Need of Quality Camera Equipment!
My students need quality DSLR cameras, such as the Nikon D3400, to learn and practice photography skills, as well as increase the quality of our yearbook images.
Most of the 35 students on our 2018-19 Journalism/Yearbook staff are 8th graders who applied and were selected for the class at the end of last school year. Many of these 8th graders were in my ELA classes as 7th graders, so I know they will create a fantastic yearbook. Early on, several of them displayed their dedication to the program by volunteering their time to help out last year’s class in preparation for our big Distribution Party. In addition to many 8th graders, we also have 7th graders: some of whom are SDC students, and others who were recommended by their 6th grade teachers. We hope to retain some 7th graders next year to build the program.
Many of the students are excited to learn about journalism and yearbook, especially the photography component.
I am so excited to work with this group of students that I know whatever resources we have, they will make the most of them!
My Project
Last year was my first year as advisor to Journalism/Yearbook after several years of instability and transition in the school's program. We inherited only a few working cameras, only one of which was a high quality DLSR. We were able to acquire one used "point and shoot" camera by way of a donation from a retired teacher, and I even brought in my own old DSLR camera. Many of the students ended up using their cell phones to photograph school events.
Suffice it to say, we need quality equipment like the Nikon D3400 to allow our students to practice on professional type cameras in order to grow our program and increase the image quality in our yearbook.
With these cameras, more students will be able to practice higher level photography techniques and skills, allowing them to achieve an image quality that can take our yearbook to the next level. We will be able to increase the size and scale of exemplary photos, making them the focus of a yearbook spread and opening up our creative design options.
Having the right equipment can make all the difference in creating a yearbook that our community will continue to appreciate and be proud of for years to come.
