Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students attend my resource reading class to bring up their reading levels and be more successful in school and in life. Most of my students have a hard time staying focused while in class, and my goal is to make them feel that they are in a safe learning environment where they don't have to feel judged.
I teach at a Title I middle school in an urban neighborhood.
Seventy-four percent of our students qualify for free or reduced rate lunches. Many come from very technology-poor homes. My students love technology and topics where they can discuss issues and express opinions. My school lacks the technology to meet my students’ needs, and I am concerned that their lack of exposure will not prepare them for the technology fluency requirements in high school. My goal is to create a classroom environment where students are motivated by technology to improve their literacy and communication skills.
My Project
My students want to get more involved in the school yearbook next year; the only problem is we have one camera. An extra camera will help me teach students in small group after school how to use different settings for different types of pictures. I will be able to teach them the editing process on the computer, to enhance photos that need to be enhanced.
As students help take pictures, they will improve their writing process by adding captions with the correct spellings and punctuation.
This will encourage students to see a more artistic side to themselves by learning how to digitally edit and produce a yearbook. In addition, students will learn how to apply photography in the Maker Space room, taking pictures of every day items and editing them to see the world through a different set of eyes.
