Help me give my students basic materials such as books, sticky notes, study carrels scissors, pencils, glue sticks, erasers, etc. to deepen their understanding of a text and understand the formulas of writing.
Hawaiian students are unique in the sense that it is not uncommon for them to never have left the island they were born on, or, in some cases, the town in which they were born. I will be teaching at a school where the percentage of students receiving free and reduced lunch hovers around 60%.
My goal this year is to expand their world view while deepening their gratitude for the beautiful aina (land) they call home.
These keiki are curious, caring, and determined to discover solutions to minimize the negative impact of man-made products on the many wonders of our planet Earth.
Due to the fact that the turnover rate for teachers on the islands is so high, students are hesitant about trusting new teachers. Their fear is that they will invest time in a person that will soon abandon them. My hope is to make them comfortable on day one by providing them the necessary materials for the year. This will help relax students that struggle to afford such items, and it will help them know that they are worth it.
My Project
I was extremely fortunate to have learned to teach under the strongest, most effective, and compassionate mentor. I have come to emulate many - if not all - of her techniques and strategies in the classroom. This requires basic supplies such as post-it notes, privacy dividers, highlighters, etc. The results of our efforts were evident in the growth and achievements of the students' confidence and high test scores at the end of the year.
For example, we watched a student go from refusing to speak in October to present a computer application to employees (teachers and administrators) county-wide in May.
We watched many ELL students quadruple their Lexile scores over the course of the year, and along with it, a radiant sense of pride from each and every one of them. We were asked to be hugged when we revealed to them that our class received the highest writing scores in the district.
All of these successes are largely attributed to the use of simple supplies. Highlighting to color code texts, Post-It notes for reading strategies such as making predictions, privacy dividers for minimizing distractions.
I don't like to ask for help, but, unfortunately, supplying a class is more expensive than I anticipated it might be. Anything helps and is appreciated more than I can properly express.
Cheers to making the world an educated, empathetic, compassionate place.
