I was extremely fortunate to have learned to teach under the strongest, most effective, and compassionate mentor. I have come to emulate many - if not all - of her techniques and strategies in the classroom. This requires basic supplies such as post-it notes, privacy dividers, highlighters, etc. The results of our efforts were evident in the growth and achievements of the students' confidence and high test scores at the end of the year. For example, we watched a student go from refusing to speak in October to present a computer application to employees (teachers and administrators) county-wide in May. We watched many ELL students quadruple their Lexile scores over the course of the year, and along with it, a radiant sense of pride from each and every one of them. We were asked to be hugged when we revealed to them that our class received the highest writing scores in the district. All of these successes are largely attributed to the use of simple supplies. Highlighting to color code texts, Post-It notes for reading strategies such as making predictions, privacy dividers for minimizing distractions. I don't like to ask for help, but, unfortunately, supplying a class is more expensive than I anticipated it might be. Anything helps and is appreciated more than I can properly express. Cheers to making the world an educated, empathetic, compassionate place.
