I teach in a Title I neighborhood school that serves a very diverse population. Many of our students have limited resources to take advantage of arts programs and instruction outside of the school setting. As a music teacher, I want to be able to bring to the classroom as many musical experiences as possible to each and every student.
This year, many of our students will be returning back to the classroom after a year of virtual.
I want to provide the same level of excellent music instruction to them. This project will provide a fun and engaging activity as we navigate our return to classroom routines and learning.
We are a very close community where students are encouraged and supported to be responsible life-long learners.
Music is an inexhaustible means for our students to learn and grow. They bring a high level of enthusiasm and energy to each class and I want to match their eagerness with an enjoyable learning environment.
My Project
We are grateful to be back in our beautiful music classroom! In order for us to remain in our classroom setting with the health and safety protocols, we are required to have individual instruments for each student. This means that all percussion instruments must be one to one.
Our djembe lessons are truly a "have fun while you learn" process.
I use call and response and echoing, along with many other techniques to instill rhythm literacy. Students find the high-energy group play so much fun and helps segue into other instrument play.
