I teach art to first through fifth grade students at a wonderful school in the foothills of North Carolina. My students are enthusiastic and eager to try each new project. Our school is large (with around 900 students), and the vast majority of our students are very limited to art exposure outside of the school. I seek to stretch students' creativity while exposing them to a wide range of artists, cultures, and mediums.
Third grade students (approximately 175 students) will learn about Chinese Dragon Robes before beginning their own embroidery project. Students will create Dream Catchers as they study Native American culture.
Fourth grade students (approximately 150 students) will study about the life of colonial children as they make yarn dolls. Students will experiment with coiling yarn for coasters as they compare coil baskets to woven baskets.
Fifth grade children (approximately 150 students) will compare and contrast woven works of art from North America and Central America before creating their own woven wall hangings. As part of their study of Central America, fifth graders will also make Worry Dolls and God's Eyes.
We need various colors and textures of yarn for these projects. Your help will be greatly appreciated!
