My students need Level Y reading books for the classroom library so that more of my students can choose books that are appropriate for their reading level.
Do you know what it is like to finish a good book and then itch for something else to read? My students do! Many of them are very proficient readers, and our classroom library cannot keep up with their needs. I've poured many of my own resources into trying to provide for them, but it is not enough!
Our urban school is situated right in the middle of a busy area.
Sadly, local public libraries are not well funded, and my students' access to quality reading material at their level is often constricted as a result. My students love to read, and I see a lot of potential in them!
My Project
These level Y books will be used to supplement our selection of classroom library books. They will be open for the students to use during their independent reading time. The students would choose books that interest them and then conference with me about what they are reading.
Research shows that having challenging, interesting books for students to self-select at their reading level is critical to students growing as readers.
Getting these books would be a very important step in providing that opportunity for my students!
Right now, most of my students have run through all the books in our classroom library that are at their level. As a result, they are having to pick books that don't challenge them to read, and their progress is stunted.
