My Students

Our middle school is a Title I school with over 85% of its students receiving free or reduced lunch. Most of our students come from low-income households. Unfortunately, they do not get much support from home as some of their parents simply cannot help them.

This area was recently devastated by the floods of Hurricane Harvey.

Many of my students have lost their homes and all their belongings. Our campus was damaged by flooding. Currently we are sharing a campus with the other middle school and our students are attending classes for half of the day. Currently, 100% of our students are receiving two meals per day from the district.

We have students who are still displaced, and some just now getting back into their homes. During this difficult time, our students need things to look forward to at school.

My Project

With everything my students have gone through with Hurricane Harvey, they need a fun outlet. A select group of students who have shown their efforts reflect better choices, responsible behavior, and respectable attitudes will be allowed to play Xbox games during lunch to celebrate their grades, efforts, and/or good behavior. I would also like to include fun games during after school tutorials that reward students who stay after for tutoring and make up work. We have a hard time getting students to come to tutorials. By offering the opportunity to play video games as a reward, we hope this will motivate the students to come!

This project allows my students to be rewarded with fun activities and games.

Teachers are constantly asking how they can use the conveniently available consumer technology in the classroom. The Xbox One holds a valuable educational process through endless possibilities. For example, one of the uses being Minecraft with its potential to teach multiple lessons in one. It is a great way to teach by making history come alive. Meanwhile, students actively work in competitive ways, but they can also work together to solve problems and challenges in a collaborative manner.

This project includes a Xbox One gaming system with the Minecraft bundle and Madden Bundle. Also in the project is an extra controller for the students to use for multiplayer use. Games included are LEGO Deminsions, Fifa18, Just Dance 2018, and Marvel vs. Capcom. These games are highly sought after, and my students will definitely come to tutorials for a chance to play them. The final two things are a TV and TV stand to conveniently roll to the needed classroom. This will allow us to set up different gaming stations that way kids are not having to gather around just one TV.
