This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Humans are addicted to music. Walk out of your door, and you'll see someone with earbuds or headphones walking down the street. Our music has exploded with genres and subgenres and underground music that can feel tailored to each emotion. My students want to enter the music scene and make their own way.
My school serves 750 students in grades 6-12, and more than 50% of the population is from inner-city districts, and more than 70% are on free lunch/breakfast programs.
While we are part of an organization that provides multiple academic and systemic opportunities to the local youth, our students still struggle with social and emotional issues.
My Project
When you think of band, specifically the percussion section, and you go through all the instruments, you get the classics; snare drum, bass drum, triangle, cymbal, xylophone, maybe timpani or chimes if you really know your instruments! Most people can agree, though these are staples of any percussion section.
We are a small music program, and we don't have any xylophones!
We're lucky to have a bass drum, two snares, and some bells, but nothing for my students to really practice their keyboard skills. I usually have 5-7 kids a year come to me, and want to be in band, but they only play piano. What can they play?! My immediate answer is xylophone, but I've never had an instrument for them before to use.
With your help, I can get my piano players to come into our band family. A simple xylophone could access dozens of students a year, and enhance the entire learning experience for all of our musicians.
