My students need basic school supplies such as pencils, paper, pens, erasers, binding materials, markers, sharpener (after all this is a writing class). We create many original writing pieces such as books, essays, posters, and advertisements.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
What makes my students special is their ability to stay motivated in an educational setting that provides them nothing but one textbook . They manage to come together either as a class, in groups, or as partners to rally around each other to get their tasks done. Who borrows looseleaf, a pencil, shares a computer, passes around the glue? Whatever needs to be done make take a bit longer, but we get it done. Eventually.
My Project
We write every single day! With that being said you can imagine how many supplies we need! All of our work is original. None of it comes from a book. Model papers are copied for each of the students, analyzed, and deconstructed in order to study writing techniques and the goals the authors achieve through the techniques. Then students apply what they have learned to original writing.
Having these pencils, paper, pens, erasers, binding materials, markers, and sharpener will give students multiple means of expression for students to demonstrate what they have learned.
Everything already has a place in the classroom. Having the supplies easily accessible will motivate and foster the creative processes that the students will need in order to succeed.
