My Students

"The typical teacher has children doing a lot of "stuff." How is what I am having children do creating readers and writers?" - Regie Routman This question drives my instructional planning. Students must engage in authentic reading and writing!

Our school is a small, rural school with usually only one teacher per grade-level.

My classroom is self-contained with usually around 20 students. Our building team continues to implement instructional strategies to improve writing skills. It is also common to have a high percentage of students that struggle to engage in learning activities. For that reason, the learners, including myself, are motivated by authentic opportunities to practice skills.

My Project

Each day during our literacy block students spend time writing and working with words. My students could use composition notebooks for collecting their daily writing. Reflection on writing pieces over time is such a valuable experience for student authors. In addition to those supplies, the word study resources will help me build developmentally appropriate activities for word work. My students need writing supplies including memo pads, journals, and pencils.

Because of this project, my students will have the opportunity to feel like 'real' writers.

These authors will be not only motivated but excited to practice important literacy skills.
