Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Future artists need your help. Art is an exceptional way to tie in academic content areas while allowing freedom and creativity to thrive. Show these kids just how much fun writing can be. Allow them to get their creative juices flowing.
My students are amazing.
They are are economically disadvantaged, inner-city kids who want to learn. Most of these kids have a home language other than English and are eager to meet any expectations set before them. They love art and are super creative. They exceed state standards in academic testing, and have proved that they have what it takes to be successful in life, given the proper tools.
My Project
My students need watercolor materials to create pieces inspired by artists studied in class. These art pieces will also accompany creative writing pieces. Watercolors are a medium that is easy for students to use and have success with. Watercolors result in beautiful images that are almost dream-like. They are the perfect medium to use in a creative writing project. However, watercolor materials are very expensive.
I want to inspire my students to learn.
Not just learn, but crave learning. I want them to be excited about their school experiences, and hope that excitement is carried beyond my doors. The kids in this neighborhood have about a 50% graduation rate. I want to make the classroom a place that can show them their worth and allow them to explore learning in non-traditional (and traditional) ways.
