Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
You create beauty with you attitude, your behavior and your actions. That is the goal for my students this school year. I am currently a 5th-grade teacher in a low socio-economic area. My goal is to show my students that they are the change agent needed in order to make things beautiful!
Many of my students have been through more in their young-life than most can imagine.
They have come to the United States in search of a better life. Sadly, because of lack of funding many of our teachers have to teach in a portable because there is not money in the funds to build onto our school. These portables are basically trailers without wheels covered with bead board for walls. My goal is to show my students that they can be the factor needed for change and how through learning we can make all things beautiful. All that is needed is a positive attitude and a willing spirit. From there the possibilities are endless.
My Project
The chart paper, markers, tension rods and command hooks will be used to make our classroom a more color working environment by covering the wall with their accomplishments, their trophies of learning. These anchor charts the students will create will add educational value as well as provide encouragement to the students as to their working abilities. The computer and ink will allow me to provide a technology component to the classroom and will provide at least two working computers to run the district mandated programs.
The highlighters requested will allow the students to highlight in their reading books and utilize good cloze reading strategies but then erase it after the activity is completed. These books need to be used year after year. The rug requested will provide a small sanctuary where students can lie on the floor and relax while reading a book or studying.
These materials will help provide these students with a beautiful learning environment which is fully decorated with their accomplishments.
It will turn what used to be a bland boring portable into a hall of victory as to the obstacles which they overcame. My students self-esteem would be lifted and they would leave our elementary school with the encouragement that they can make a difference in their own lives, all they need is the proper attitude and willingness to write their own future.
