Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
106 years is the age of the building my students come to every day. Located on the westside of Chicago, our school serves pre-K- 8th grade. Our demographic is predominantly Latino with many students learning English as a second language. The entire school qualifies for free breakfast and lunch. Often, students eat more at school than at home. They are motivated and love, love, love to learn. I usually teach Middle School Science. However, I have been recruited to do something a little different, starting soon, I will be teaching hand writing and penmanship. Unfortunately, resources for this endeavor are minimal. Please help my students and I explore this new topic with dry erase boards and special writing paper. We appreciate your help.
My Project
In a world where my students think, "C U L8R" is writing....I have been tasked with teaching handwriting and penmanship. Both of these skills have been taken out of the curriculum in the Chicago Public Schools. Dry erase boards will help us save paper because we can practice, erase and practice again. My kids are really motivated when they use different color markers and boards. I love using these tools because the kids feel less pressure to be perfect and allow themselves to just learn the skill. Teaching my students to "write" the right way will make them more able to communicate, give them confidence to express themselves in the written word and make them more college ready. Oh, and did I mention how great it will be for me and every other teacher they ever have to actually be able to read what they are able to correctly write?
