My Students
My amazing students attend a small, rural high school that is working hard to maintain high standards and resources with few funds. We call it "being scrappy" and making the most out of what we have.
My students are hunters, farmers, athletes, musicians, and artists, but they are not really writers, for the most part. We are working on improving our students' writing abilities this year through a variety of initiatives. Students need to write more to be better writers--it seems easy enough, but convincing 11th graders that writing is good for them is a little harder.
My Project
In order to increase writing in my classroom, I'm trying to make it where students never need to worry about supplies like pens, pencils, and erasers. Many struggling writers will spend their time looking for materials instead of writing.
With filled desk caddies on each table, students need never waste their time rummaging in bags looking for a pen or an eraser. Instead, they can focus on honing their craft. Having ready supplies like Post-it notes, Wite-Out, and highlighters on each table will increase student efficiency and encourage students to work on the art of writing and not the art of evading the task because they are uncomfortable with it.
