Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Middle school students are a different breed! They are bright, funny, inspiring, emotional, intense, energetic, and extremely talented. In the midst of discovering who they will become as they continue to grow, they are learning and developing new skills and talents. As their teacher, it is my job to love, support and encourage them as they navigate through this crazy world called "Middle School."

My students are an amazing group of kids from all over the world - literally!

As an ESOL teacher, I work with students whose second language is English. Many come to me shy, a little scared and nervous, yet eager to learn. At times, they speak little to no English and are placed into classrooms where only English is spoken. Imagine how difficult that would be!

Even with these challenges, they are strong young men and women who realize the value and importance of a strong education. They work harder, study longer, and push themselves to be the best they can be. As hard as middle school already is for kids this age, my students embrace it. They celebrate their differences and the success of one another. They are an inspiration to me!

My Project

As ESOL students, my kids struggle with getting their ideas on paper in English. They work hard to get an essay complete, from brainstorming, to rough draft, to final draft. How can chairs, laminating pouches, folders, pencil sharpeners, and notebooks help my students become more confident in their writing? Since our first Writing Masterpieces With the Right Stuff project was funded, students have received the paper, pencils, and pens they need to write their final drafts.

The items in this project will help with publishing and sharing their writing.

First, the notebooks will be a place where students can work through the writing process for all their essays. By keeping it all in one notebook, students will be able to see their progress from the beginning of the year to the end of the year. Once they write their final draft on paper, the laminating pouches will help protect their writing and make it easy to display and help provide a protective cover so it will last for years to come. The folders provide a space to keep all our final drafts. And who doesn't need a pencil sharpener when they are writing so much!? Finally, the two chairs will give the students a place to share their writing. By calling it a "publishing chair," students will know that they need to work hard to complete their writing and make it to the chair in order to share. They will feel special, knowing they have the full attention of the class as they read their writing masterpiece!
