Writing for Understanding

My students need tools to help them write words and sentences. The iPad and Boogie Boards will help them greatly.

My Students

I have ten students with special needs in first, second, and third grades. The students in my classroom have either intellectually disabilities, autism, or multiple disabilities.

Writing is a difficult task for my students to learn.

Many of my students struggle with motor skills in their hands, other students dislike using pencil and paper due to sensory concerns. We use shaving cream, play dough and many other tools to teach basic letters and numbers. My students are ready to move forward and learn to write words and sentences.

My Project

Many of my students have autism. This means that pencil scratching against paper is unpleasant for them. I am trying to get additional tools which will give then alternative methods to learn to write words and sentences. I have other methods I have used for letter formation. However, my students have advanced and now need tools to help them move forward. The have learned about words and they are able to place word cards in the correct order for sentence formation. The next step is for them to write the sentences they are creating. The boogie boards are great because they mimic pencil and paper but they do not have the same scratching sensation.
