Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students consist of low socio-economic status and military families. 75% of the students that attend my school are not performing on grade level in reading and math. The school that I teach at has only been accredit for 2 years, but the teachers are still trying to get the students prepared with limited resources.

25% of our students suffer from some type of trauma.

This makes it hard for them to focus on learning. I have to find different ways to keep the students engaged. The group of students that I will be working with need a reason to care and try. Help be that reason.

My Project

Writing has been highly neglected in elementary because teachers are focusing on state testing. Students do not like to write because they are not very good readers. The items in the cart will help students begin to take responsibility for their writing, which should encourage them to read more.

Writing and reading go hand and hand.

With your help, the fifth graders will become better readers and writers. They will be able to write in their personal journals daily about life events and school related topics that help them focus on comprehension in different types of text. The end goal is for students to use writing as an outlet for their life and to motivate them to read and write in their spare time.
