My students are fourth and fifth grade resource students with varying disabilities. Most have learning disabilities, but some are autistic and some have emotional disabilities.
The majority of my students are from low income homes.
My students struggle with reading and writing. We focus on below grade level skills during their time in resource in order to be successful in the general curriculum.
These students will not let their disabilities define them! They work hard to overcome any challenges life places before them.
I am going to ask my students to practice their writing skills by communicating with an English learner in a special education classroom in Italy.
Written communication is a lost art.
I plan on teaching my students how to address an envelope, what is appropriate to write about, and how to address and sign a letter. All of these skills will be taught in our resource room. However, the skills will be practiced on stationary and our letters will be mailed to our pen pals in a special education classroom of English learners in Italy.
My students won't even realize they are practicing writing as they write bi-weekly to their pen pals. My students will also gain understanding for Italian schools and culture as they read letters written to them from their Italian peers.
