I teach 24 2nd grade students this year, and will take this class to third grade next year in an effort to increase their academic success. I teach in a mid-sized neighborhood school that consists of low to middle-income students. Many of my students speak English as a second language. In my efforts to increase writing success in my students for the remainder of this year and into the 2006-2007 school year, I realize that my students need tools that make writing more fun. I would like for my students to have a variety of tools and materials to help them become more creative in their writing while also focusing on using proper grammar and mechanics. These materials are high-interest and very motivating. While several students are actively engaged with these writing tools independently, I will be able to pull small groups of students who need more help on a particular writing skill. The resources that I want for my students are called Help Yourself Writing Rings, Write-A-Story Game, and Writing Prompt Wheels. These resources will allow me to help my students improve their writing while having a lot of fun at the same time. I believe that when I can make learning fun, I have captured the minds and bodies of my students. I feel that if my students have access to these games and materials, I can make writing more fun and less stressful. If my students are feeling successful at school each day, they will want to come back. If I can give my students a solid foundation in writing, then they will encounter fewer problems later in school and be more likely to succeed. I really think that these resources will benefit my students tremendously.
