My students are amazing!

They may not have enough food or may not have electricity or running water at home. The one thing they do have is the ability and willingness to learn. I want my students to be on grade level at the end of the year. The biggest challenge is that they will enter my 6th grade classroom and will be far below grade expectations. This means that they may only read at a 3rd grade level and at times lower. This is a challenge because as we all know, you have to read in all subject areas in order to succeed. I teach at a school where 98 percent of the students are Hispanic and English is their second language. The entire student population of about 350 is receiving free breakfast and lunch. Also, in my class alone this year, I had over half my students sent home with a bag of food for the weekend.

My Project

My class was just informed that we will have a classroom set of Chromebooks. I don't know who is more excited about this, the students or me. With that being said, we will be typing up all of our writing assignments to be published in the students writing folders. In order for this to be done in the classroom we will be needing a printer along with toner. Students will gain so much from being able to type and print out their writing. They will be able to see first hand the publishing process.

Donations to this project will improve my students writing dramatically.

They will be able to print and make correction and print again if needed. This will be something that they will be able to do on their own with little instruction. It is important with students at the 6th grade level to have a sense of independence. This will give them that along with a new found love of writing.
