This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In my first- and second-year String Orchestra classrooms, students are busy learning to play new songs and develop their technical skills. They are enthusiastically preparing for Spring Concerts. This music now connects more skills from the last semester, combining rhythms and pitches in more complicated patterns. Much of my class is not reading at grade level - which means that for many of these students, the reading of musical notation is confusing- and one more area to feel discouraged about. We spend time in every class identifying pitch names and the associated fingerings as they relate to the music. Students work in pairs, in small groups, and as a whole class. I want to fully support these young musicians with this aspect of their learning.

These materials will provide much-needed supplies to support every Orchestra student in learning to recognize MUSIC NOTATION, its relationship to PITCH, and FINGERINGS for their instrument.

The individual dry-erase boards will allow each student to show me quickly what they understand by drawing specific pitches or rhythms on their board. My classes are large, and our time together is very short. This will help me assess the knowledge of students efficiently so that I can identify confusion and address it quickly. The tape and bean bags will be used as a way to make games for note reading - I will make a large staff on the floor with the tape, and students will toss a bean bag onto the "Staff." We can use this for teams to determine if the bean bag landed on a line or a space, what the pitch is, and whether the pitches ascend or descend from each other. These games will help make learning fun and playful!
