Our third graders want to create cards and projects using cursive handwriting as beautiful as the flowers they are growing in the school garden. When they write garden idioms like "a bed of roses", their handwriting will flourish.
Our urban school serves 498 K-5 students: 40% are English Language Learners, 11.8% are in special education, and 7% are designated gifted.
52% of students are eligible for free or reduced price lunch, 11.8% are designated Special Education, 7% are designated GATE and 40% of the students are English Language Learners (ELL-LEP/NEP).
Our third grade students plant, care for, harvest and eat nutritional foods in our school garden. 25 students have formed a service club "Green Team" to spread awareness of garden and environmental issues.
My Project
Students enjoy finding and using idioms. They have finished a project of ocean idioms. Now they are searching for garden related idioms such as "Don't sit on the fence," or "beat around the bush" or "be a wallflower". Now, with their own cursive handwriting practice books, our students will proclaim "everything's coming up roses" and "life is just a bowl of cherries."
Do you remember learning cursive in third grade with all the practice of those sweeping capitals?
Our third graders do not have individual books to practice and we do not have paper or other supplies to make copies. This project will let them practice, apply and excel as they learn a wonderful life skill.
