My students come from high poverty, low socioeconomic backgrounds. Many of them live in low income apartments. One hundred percent of them qualify for government assistance and the federal free lunch program. Many of them are ELL learners and speak English as a second language. However, these barriers do not discourage their love for learning!
These students come to school every day excited and ready to improve their reading and writing.
Their parents are very concerned about their children's education to provide them a better life. Although they are disadvantaged in so many ways, you would never know it by their positive attitudes and eagerness to learn.
My Project
It seems every year our state's education budget is being slashed over and over. More burden is being placed on teachers to provide supplies for their students. We hoard supplies like squirrels saving nuts for the winter. Even being paid lowest in the nation, we still find the place in our budget to purchase these supplies for our students.
A good pencil with an eraser is like gold to a teacher.
We walk up and down the halls picking them up out of the trash piles that have been swept out of rooms. We dig in deplorable desks to find them. We mark them so we will know which careless student lost them. It's tiring. This project, will keep me from needing to purchase pencils for a very long time. That makes for a happy teacher, which makes for a happy student, which makes for a happy school!
