My students need a variety of books to improve literacy, composition notebooks to work on writing skills, and a document sorter to increase organization in the classroom.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have spent my summer planning for my new classroom (I am moving from kindergarten to 1st grade), researching strategies to get my students on track in both reading and writing. By the end of this year I want my students to be confident readers and writers and your support will help get them there.
Since I am moving up a grade I will actually know almost all my students!
These kids are an active and fun bunch, and they love learning through songs and hands-on activities. However, I also know that many of them did not meet grade level expectations in reading or writing last year. In fact, my principal has informed all teachers at my school that many students in the upper-grades scored poorly on the end-of-year reading tests because they could not pass the writing portion. I want my students to be prepared when they get into the upper grades, and targeting reading and writing skills now will help them be successful on future state and county tests.
My Project
I am requesting a variety of nonfiction and fiction books that I have researched and will use to expand vocabulary and teach comprehension strategies. My students and I will reread one book several times each week, focusing on different skills with each reading. I am only requesting books that I could not find at my local or school library or that I think would be a great addition to my classroom.
I am very excited about the composition notebooks that we will use for writing each day. Last year, I tried to create home-made journals, and this was such a struggle since I have a limited number of copies and the students had a difficult time keeping their papers together. The composition books will allow my students to monitor their progress throughout the year, and they include space for thinking maps and drawings.
I also requested a mailbox-type storage unit so that my students can easily pick up and turn in homework and other important forms.
Your support for my project will greatly improve my classroom this year.
The storage unit will bring organization to my room and will encourage my students to be more independent and responsible. The composition books and storage unit will save me a lot of time, giving me more time to teach! Studies show that an optimal number of books for a classroom library is 300-600, depending on grade level. I am working toward this number, and your donation will help me get there!
