My Students

Let's write a story! I hear this frequently during the week. My students get excited about writing. They are proud of their work until they begin to read it out loud, and they realize it does not make sense.

My students are a group of energetic second graders who love to tell and write stories.

We do not have any textbooks for writing. They need materials to reinforce vocabulary, grammar, sentence building, and paragraph writing. The writing standards for second grade are a big jump from those of first grade. My students want to learn. They just need materials to help them learn.

My Project

The grammar center will reinforce parts of speech and grammar skill while playing fun games. The vocabulary center will focus on synonyms, antonyms, prefixes, and suffixes. The sentence building center will provide practice in punctuation as well as avoiding sentence fragments. The paragraph building center will help the students learn how to write a topic sentence, include details, and write a conclusion.

Writing effectively is an essential skill for future success.

We should take every opportunity to help our children develop as writers while they are still excited about being able to record their thoughts and ideas on paper.
