I teach second grade in a school in suburban Berkeley County, South Carolina. Currently there are 18 students in my class. This number fluctuates as the school year progresses. Many of the students at my school come from underprivileged homes. These homes may be homes where the parents cannot read or write. They may not know skills that are necessary to succeed in society. In the past I have placed a large focus on reading and math in my classroom. Now, I want to begin to focus on student writing. I believe in order for children to become writers teachers need to make writing interesting. One way I want to do this is through the use of a publishing center. I would like to create a center in my room that contains bound books, created by me, for the children to "publish" their work in. In order to do this I need materials such as a book binder, binder combs, heavy stock paper in multiple colors, assorted colored pencils, an electric pencil sharpener, a small paper cutter (to use as I am making books) and glue sticks. With these materials I will create books. After the students write a piece they are proud of they will have the opportunity to turn their writing into a published book. This will serve as a grand incentive to write and make writing fun!
