Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a diverse mix of energetic, intelligent, and curious 9 and 10-year-olds who need resources to truly excel. My school is an urban, high-poverty school that strives to do what's best for the kids, but we often don't have the budget for the "extras", and by "extras" I mean basic supplies, books, technology, field trips, etc. These are the things that can make a significant positive impact on student learning and growth. Many of my students have had traumatic backgrounds, have learned English as a second language (ESL), or have families that struggle to simply put food on the table. Despite these challenges, they thrive when presented with the opportunity to do so.
My intention is to work each and every day to help close the opportunity gap facing the wonderful students in my classroom.
My Project
In my classroom the majority of my instructional time is spent with small groups of students. This has transformed my teaching and allows me to meet students where they are academically. Unfortunately, most of the furniture and fixtures (i.e. expensive items!) in my classroom are set-up and intended for whole group instruction. With this project I am starting the process to "right-size" my classroom furniture and fixtures with a portable easel with a magnetic whiteboard surface.
The portable easel will give me the ability to write notes, problems, and examples for students to see during small group instruction without distracting students that are working independently and/or collaboratively in other areas of the room.
In addition to my writing on the easel, students will also be able to write on and interact with the notes and problems written and/or displayed on the easel. I know students love to use the whiteboard and now they'll be able to use it during small group instruction!
