My Project

Every child deserves a safe space to slow down, reflect, and process the many emotions they experience throughout the school day. As an elementary school counselor, I work with students who are learning how to recognize their feelings, solve problems, and develop healthy coping skills. I want to create a welcoming journaling station where students can personalize their own journal, making it a special place to express themselves through writing, drawing, or responding to thoughtful social-emotional prompts.

This journaling station will provide students with a proactive tool for emotional regulation before challenges arise.

Students will be able to use the station during breakfast and morning arrival to help them transition into the school day with a calm, focused mindset. They’ll also have access to it throughout the day whenever they need a quiet moment to reflect, reset, or process their feelings. By creating and keeping a journal that is uniquely their own, students will build self-awareness, strengthen emotional regulation skills, and develop a lifelong coping strategy that supports both their mental wellness and academic success.

To make this station functional and sustainable, the project includes blank journals, social-emotional journal prompt cards, stickers and decorating materials so students can personalize their journals, and mail cubbies where each student can safely store their journal between visits. Having a designated place for each journal allows students to return to their writing over time, reflect on their growth, and know that their thoughts are being kept in a safe, organized space. My hope is that this station becomes a comforting corner where students feel empowered to express themselves, build resilience, and discover that their thoughts, feelings, and stories truly matter.
