Write, Design, Film, Animate and Record Me a Story!
My students need to develop their skills as digital storytellers. We need a 2000W lighting kit with 10' x 12' Chromakey green screen and softbox lights along with 3 Stopmotion kits w/cameras for digital storytelling stations.
Every student needs to be challenged. I work with Academically Intellectually Gifted students in three rural schools. Two of these schools are on the edge of our county, so far from town, that we struggle to get an internet signal. All three are Title I schools with the majority receiving free or reduced-priced lunch. All three are in close proximity to one of our nation's largest military bases.
The AIG students are some of the hardest to grow academically.
Their teachers and I consult regularly to find ways to make sure this student population has access to challenging learning experiences and access to diverse ways to approach a problem. They need opportunities to expand their thinking and develop their unique gifts. As their teacher, I have to bring many experiences to them because the environment just doesn't offer the same opportunities that a city might.
Just as these students have academic needs, their regular ed peers do too. As an AIG teacher, I work with all the students that need acceleration. Every student needs a challenge. Every school does not have the budget to provide access to those challenges.
My Project
My academically/intellectually gifted students are eager to learn new ways to use technology. I am eager to keep providing new digital and technological opportunities for them to explore. This technology will help them continue to grow and develop into digitally sound storytellers with a solid foundation in the ever-changing world of technology.
My students have stories to tell and this project will allow them to delve into stop motion animation, video creation, prop selection, lighting, green screen production, script writing and so much more!
With the green screen with lighting kit, the children will be able to record themselves telling an audience about a moment in history while displaying a video of a text they have written or a project they have produced. They could act out a play they have written, with props and actors. We will produce news productions that will be shared with schools and families.
The stop motion camera kit would allow the students to use their imaginations and collaborate ways to succinctly 'tell' a story with clay, drawings, figures, even blocks. My students will create PSA's . They might explain how a campfire should be extinguished, or how to tie a shoe using stop motion. These students will become school/community advocates!
When writing and reading print based text is combined with on-screen production, a 21st century component is added to literacy. My students will have the opportunity to develop their digital storytelling technology with this funding.
