This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have a group of 21 students, that come from low income families, who come to school every day ready to learn and try something new. Our small Title 1 school creates a learning environment that helps address students' personal needs in an effort to help them grow as learners. Many of my students have been exposed to toxic stress, and this can have a negative impact on behavior and learning. Creating an environment where students feel comfortable and supported is critical for their academic success.
My Project
My first grade students are striving to become the best readers and writers they can be. Literacy centers are used to build reading and writing skills in a variety of hands-on ways.
Using individualized white boards is a great way to let students respond to questions and express themselves comfortably, at their level.
Double-sided Magnetic Write and Wipe boards also make correcting mistakes an easier and quicker process by eliminating eraser messes, avoiding ripped papers, and reducing student frustrations. Students are able to practice writing words, complete sentences, and improve hand-writing with the white boards selected. By eliminating writing stresses, students are more engaged, more often. Having students respond to questions on white boards allows me to assess individual students, even when working in a larger groups.
Stamps are a fun way for kids build their sight word vocabulary. The Lakeshore washable ink pads requested will allow for students to practice spelling first grade sight words with letter stamps that we already have. Learning to read and write sight words is just one step in building fluent readers and writers.
