This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Wrestling is one of the oldest sports in our history. At our middle school, we have - for the first time - a wrestling after school program with a group of kids who are excited to workout and learn how to wrestle. As the kids transition from middle school to high school, they also transition from wrestling my afterschool program to the high school’s wrestling team in which I’m the head coach. The goal is for students to build a foundation in their skill set in middle school, build confidence in their ability to wrestle, and develop their potential into a top level high school wrestler in the state of Illinois.

The importance of organized team sports at the middle school and high school level cannot be stressed enough.

The pandemic has had an effect on kids' abilities to socialize, interact with each other, or even grow as individuals. Now more than ever kids need to feel they are a part of something bigger than themselves. Being part of a team while learning how to develop a good work ethic, setting goals, and overcoming adversity will build self worth in these kids and that is something they can be proud of.

In wrestling, the most important piece of equipment are shoes. It’s also the hardest to come by for new wrestlers because of the financial commitment it entails for the families to get new shoes for a kid trying out a new sport. Your donations will help the kids have access to wrestling shoes and relieve the parents of pressure to buy them. This will open up the opportunity for students to participate and try a new sport that they may have never been able to even think about before.
