Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am the only school counselor for over 600 amazing students. Ninety percent of our students are Latino, and 76% are from low-income families. About 11% of our students are considered special needs. Our students are bright and creative and come from hard-working, loving families that want to see their children succeed.
Not being physically in school has been a challenge for many students, families, and teachers, but we are all trying the best we can with what we have.
My Project
After a year of remote learning, some of our students have returned to our school building, while some continue learning at home. While the move to remote learning was essential due to the pandemic, it has not occurred without incident.
With this shift in the learning environment has come an increase in anxiety, depression, social isolation, insecurity, loneliness, helplessness, and hopelessness from students of all ages.
The books selected will play a huge role in addressing the needs of students and are necessary for creating a positive and impactful school experience for students. The books will be used for both individual and group sessions and will allow me to continue supporting students through a variety of challenges they may be experiencing like grief, anger, and anxiety.
