World History Through Virtual Tours

My students need an opportunity to view world through the internet. Without a laptop, I cannot use my data projector.

My Students

"Professor Johnston often said that if you didn't know history, you didn't know anything. You were a leaf that didn't know it was part of a tree." Michael Crichton said, and my students realize this. The entire world is at our finger tips today, but many still can't see the tree.

Growing up in an impoverished environment, I was lucky.

My father joined the Air Force, and I was able to travel the world with my family. That experience led me to teaching and teaching led me to becoming a great storyteller. An orator, yet, we live in an age of wonderment. An age of opportunity, and these children deserve an opportunity. I teach in an area that is stricken by poverty. Many come from broken homes or impoverished areas, where education and the English language are limited. Teaching World History with words and books are great, but these students deserve more. The world is at the click of a mouse, and I want to show the world to these students. Take them on a carpet ride through Persia or a camel ride through North Africa, let history come alive.

My Project

A laptop, hooked to a data projector will allow students to see the world through a virtual tour. Imagine walking the Great Wall of China or sailing the Mediterranean Sea to Greece, Rome, and Carthage. This is what needs to happen for these students, who desire so much, because they have so little. A notebook, a pencil, a sheet of paper given to them, makes them smile, imagine the gift of the world handed to them, imagine that smile. Technology is so great, and yet when you work in an area where free and reduced lunch is expected, the idea of escape sometimes is all they have. World History provides that escape and will allow each student to visualize the opportunities that lay beyond they neighborhood.

The impact to me is minimal, because I have visited many of the places that they can only read about.

This is an opportunity for me to share things with them, that could change their outlook on life. Please help a student view the world through art, language, and relationships, and not just through a lecture.
