World Culture Through I Am Malala

Help me give my students a chance to learn world culture through the eyes of a young girl banned from getting an education. I am Malala is a memoir that will help my students understand world culture. Thanks!

My Students

My students are academically gifted students that live in a high poverty area. The district received a grant to provide free breakfast and lunch for all students because of its high number that qualify. The staff at my school try to provide experiences that will show them what is beyond their community because they may not have those opportunities available elsewhere.

My students desire to understand the world in every capacity but our resources are limited.

My Project

"I am Malala" is a memoir about a young girl growing up in a country taken over by the Taliban. In her quest for rights for females to attend school she was shot in the head for standing up for these rights. Her story is remarkable and inspiring and I hope that my students get a chance to be inspired.

Reading this novel, "I am Malala," will provide my students an opportunity to understand a different culture and be able to reflect on their own culture.

Americans are guaranteed an education regardless of where they come from and who they are so my students sometimes do not appreciate learning. Please help my students understand this!
