Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Rick Lavoie is quoted saying, "Fair doesn't mean giving every child the same thing, it means giving every child what they need." This year I have been blessed to work with 17 unique and incredible children, and as cliche as it sounds, they truly do come from all walks of life. Of my 17 students, 3 are receiving additional reading support and 2 are receiving therapeutic day services. Despite their differences, every single one of my students has a desire to learn and a desire to be loved.

When asked what is something they each needed from me as a teacher, I received responses ranging from requests for extra help in specific subject areas to simply asking for a hug.

And when asked what is one thing I should know about them, they answered with favorite hobbies and painful secrets. My kids are complex, and their emotions and experiences are as touching as they are heartbreaking at times.

I strive to make a personal connection with each student, and that connection allows me to create a more tailored learning environment. I hope to use our relationships further their drive for knowledge and spark interest in new areas along the way.

My Project

We say that our students and children are the "future movers and shakers" of our world, but I can assure you they are moving and shaking already! The benefits of flexible seating arrangements have been debated for several years, and in my experience they certainly enhance the learning environment. I currently have one standing desk in my classroom for a particularly fidgety student, and his desk is the envy of the other students.

By providing options such as standing desks and alternative seating, I hope to channel that freedom of choice into a stronger focus on learning, rather than how uncomfortable or restricting traditional seating options may feel to my students.

My kids have already indicated their desire for these options, and I am looking for donations to help make those requests a reality. These options are not intended to replace traditional desks, only to augment my current classroom layout.
