My students need a rug and a bookcase.
My wonderful group of 2nd graders need to be able to sit comfortably at their centers. Our classroom has vinyl flooring throughout which is too cold to sit on in the winter months. I've provided multiple centers for them around the room which means we have a need for many carpets!
The majority of the students in my classroom come from low income, hard working families.
They are mostly African American and Hispanic. The are eager learners but are limited in resources outside of their school environment. They attend a public school with the majority of students on free or reduced lunch. They are the most loving and interesting group of children who have new ideas and abilities beyond anyone's imagination! They just need to be given the chance to prove what they know in a comfortable setting.
I have spent the last 4 months building a classroom that is welcoming and comfortable. Organization and structure is very important to the success of these students since many of their lives don't have much of either. They are excited to come into our room everyday and know this is their space and treat it with respect. The bookshelf and rug are for one of the new centers that I created. Since space is limited I have to be creative in developing working areas that are useful but comfortable and organized. Both of these items will allow my children access to materials as well as warmth from the vinyl flooring when they are working together at the center. They are excited to begin exploring their new geography center! My students need a rug to sit comfortably at the geography center I just created for them. The bookshelves are to organize the supplies I provide for them to use.
I have been in the same school my entire career of 19 years.
Some may say it is a "tough" school since we have a limited PTA with no funds or donations coming to teachers. I have seen these students succeed with much less than other students in other schools who have higher socio-economic levels. People don't realize how amazing it is to see 7 year olds cheer when I bring in new pencils or multi colored notebooks for them. Just know any donation will be greatly appreciated!
