Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 22 enthusiastic, diverse, and energetic 4 and 5-year-old learners in a collaborative, Expanded Transitional Kindergarten in a large, urban, 100% Title I, a public school in Los Angeles. My students are unique individuals with various levels of abilities. Many are English learners, and 1/3 of the class have intellectual, developmental, social, or sensory challenges.
We highlight and celebrate each student's strengths and work together to foster an inclusive community.
My students spend their day actively learning through play, literature, music, movement, and hands-on experiences. Our classroom provides students with opportunities to develop their social skills, communication skills, and the foundation for academic learning. Our motto is "Everyone can be a leader."
My Project
In normal circumstances, I would not request workbooks for my preschool students, but these aren't normal times. My four and five-year-old students are home now that our schools are closed. The older students at our school were given laptops and their class workbooks for home distant learning. We don't have laptops or workbooks for our students.
We learn through play and activities in our classroom, but at home, many of my students do not have access to learning materials.
I share videotaped lessons and educational websites with families, but they are requesting more. They would like practice sheets to keep their children busy and learning readiness skills. I don't have access to a copy machine to continue to work packets.
Workbooks and journals would help my students to continue to learn and practice at home with their families.
