When I was in school my parents provided every supply I could ever need, as well as helping in my classroom. They read to me and shaped my behavior. The students I work with often do not have these same resources. It becomes our duty to help students to be and feel success.
I work with elementary special education students.
They work on not only academic skills, but also require social skills, behavior, and adaptive skills. They work hard and try their best. Many do not come to school with supplies or have supplies at home. I try to provide as much as I can, while also making sure to have what they need when they are in my classroom.
Our school has many students who do not speak English as their first language so vocabulary becomes a key part of their learning. We also have a high level of poverty in our building, therefore students require much more than basic reading, writing, and math education.
The students come to school eager to learn, at times with minimal skills and supplies to get them started.
My Project
I am asking for many different resources. The basic school supplies, such as crayons, glue, paper, etc. will be used in my classroom for various activities. My hope is that I will be able to provide them with supplies to take home, or have in their general education classroom as well.
The puzzles are fun, but also help students to work together to figure out how to put it together.
I am asking for a couple social skills books/activities. These will help students who may be lacking in that area to learn those necessary skills.
Lastly, I am asking for vocabulary resources to aid in building student vocabulary, which will help them better comprehend what is being said to them and what they read.
Your donations to this project will aid in student growth, and their ability to be on a level playing field with other students in the Northwest.
Being able to provide all these resources will make a difference in student lives by allowing them to complete homework, classwork understand things that happen around them and learn to be kind, work as a team, and be better members of our community, in and out of school.
