Bulletin boards cover the walls and halls of every elementary school. Sometimes, students' work can be overlooked no matter how wonderful because the surrounding area lacks the needed creative effects that demand attention.
I teach a diverse class of second graders in a Title I school in South Carolina.
Many come from single-parent homes considered low in socioeconomic status. They are eager to learn and are very excited when they finish work that gets hung on the walls.
My Project
Imagine a second grader who has worked for a week brainstorming, drafting, revising and editing a piece of writing or spent two days during science illustrating the poles of magnets. Their work is finished but my work is not. I need to make sure that the finished items are highlighted in a way that makes the student feel special. A Cricut machine is just what my classroom needs. We can cut out neat titles and engaging visuals creating a backdrop or bulletin board that will show each student that their contribution is important and crucial part of the classroom!
What makes a student want to do their best in the classroom?
Teachers realize how important it is for students to show off their hard work. The attention and positive remarks they receive from their hanging projects creates such proud students! It increases self-esteem and creates a sense of community as they admire each other's work.
