Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I am a special education teacher in North Minneapolis, Minnesota.

We are a school community that tends to be viewed as underprivileged and disadvantaged, however, my students are amazingly smart, sensitive, kind and hard-working individuals.

My students with disabilities are very capable of learning within the general education classroom. They need tools and strategies to help them participate in the classroom with their non-disabled peers.

I teach students with disabilities how to use strategies and tools to participate with their non-disabled peers.

My Project

Having choice time at school is very important to the development of my early learners. We use choice time as an incentive to work hard and persevere through hard academic tasks. I emphasize work first, then choice. However, we need fun engaging toys to play with so students have some external motivation also. Playtime is a great opportunity for students to develop social skills and life skills such as turn taking, sharing, positive peer interaction. We need help purchasing additional choice time items, Fisher-Price Little People Big Helpers Home, cooking equipment and more that appeal to all the different learners in my groups. The students I work with love building but there are some others who enjoy pretend play as well. We need more options for the kids who love to pretend play. These items would really help our youngest students.
