Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
College is a scary and unknown place that my middle schoolers dare to dream about. Future lawyers, veterinarians, nurses, surgeons, teachers, architects, military officers and scientists sit in my classroom. Despite the mysteries of collegiate life and the students’ excited nervousness, they dream big and do not allow anything other than sheer determination play a role as they embark on the college path. Their life goals and aspirations amaze and encourage me to work diligently every day to help them be successful and become first generation college students in their families.
My Project
Many of my AVID students do not have adequate vocabularies to wordsmith their essays, and even though technology is on hand, when they use an effective reference tool in book form, it proves to be much more accurate.
Finding the perfect word or words to accurately carry a writer's message is a challenge, especially when the tools limit the writer.
My goal is to build a strong foundation in writing skills so students can effectively communicate to future admissions officers and scholarship committees their desires and dreams for higher education. Furthermore, they want careers and as an employee or business owner, they must be able to effectively explain and inform through writing.
Students spend time completing research on multiple topics and also write essays about themselves. Of course, during writing conferences, questions emerge about meaning, word choice and usage. When I direct them to use the classroom computer or their phones as a reference tool, they soon learn that searching online is not as beneficial as having an actual book.
I would like to provide them with reference books so they interact with the language as they search for definitions, synonyms and antonyms while producing written essays that accurately communicates their messages.
